Report for America is a national service program that places emerging journalists into local newsrooms to report on urgent under-covered issues and communities. It is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, an award winning, independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to supporting the next generation of journalists.

Report for America is a dynamic, rapidly-growing answer to America’s crisis in local news reporting. This year Report for America expanded from roughly 60 corps members to 225 as part of an ambitious plan to ensure that every American county has regular access to excellent local news. Our reporters and photojournalists work at newspapers large and small, public radio stations, TV stations, digital publications, wire services and investigative nonprofits. This year they are in 163 newsrooms across 46 states, plus Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C and we anticipate more growth in 2021.

We are seeking an experienced Operations Associate to support the Local Sustainability and Development team. This candidate will be responsible for managing operational logistics as well as produce communication materials for our local newsroom partners, donors, foundations and corporations. This position is full-time and will be able to be performed remotely. This position reports to the Director of Local Sustainability and Development.

Role and Responsibilities

The Local Sustainability Operations Associate will join a fast-growing development team and contribute to an ambitious fundraising effort to raise $70 million over the next five years through leading national and regional foundations, corporations, and major donors.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage logistics and produce materials to support Local Sustainability efforts for Report for America, ranging from webinars, to research, to newsletters for our newsrooms and donor community, as well as identify other creative opportunities to engage them;

  • Design, develop and maintain visually-appealing and creative communication materials to effectively spotlight GroundTruth’s programs and community impact, including participating in the development of the annual report;

  • Support donor research functions to support Local Sustainability and Development managers, including producing donor profiles ahead of key meetings and events; and

  • Facilitate information collection from partner newsrooms about their fundraising activities;

  • Coordinate with Development Communications team for online and direct mail appeals;

  • Administer day-to-day Local Sustainability tasks, such as working externally and internally on emerging needs, projects and problems;

Successful candidates will possess:

o 3-5 years of professional work experience in a nonprofit fundraising and development role securing five and six figure grants;

o Demonstrated experience in proposal development, prospect research, and local information ecosystems;

o Demonstrated experience working independently and making work happen;

o Background and education in development, communications, marketing, social sciences, or business;

o Outstanding writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to write on a deadline;

o Software skills should include Google Suite, Salesforce, Adobe, Zoom, as well as familiar with Twitter and other social media platforms

o Excellent attention to detail, especially as it relates to handling sensitive information and tracking down data;

o An ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment; A customer service mindset that centers our donors as a critical part of our work;

o A sense of humor, creativity, flexibility and high standards in nonprofit excellence.
